Programs and Services

Our programs and services enable cancer patients and their families to manage their treatment and recovery as effectively as possible, increase their chances for survival, and provide for a higher quality of life. Anyone affected by cancer is welcome, and all of our services are always free of charge.

CSC Members honored at San Francisco Giants game!

Cancer Support Community members were recently honored at Strike Out Cancer – where they took the field during a pregame ceremony at a San Francisco Giants game. This celebration of cancer survivorship was made possible by the generosity of Genentech. We can’t thank them enough for giving our wonderful survivors this amazing opportunity.

The Wings of Hope: Butterfly Release is Taking Flight!

Please join us by sponsoring a butterfly today. Celebrate and honor those who have been touched by cancer. Butterfly sponsorship begins at only $25.

All proceeds from the event will directly benefit the Cancer Support Community to provide support, education and hope free of charge to anyone affected by cancer.

You may bring your family and friends for the festivities. activities include a ceremonial Monarch butterfly release (at 12pm), food, and fun activities for the entire family. you need not be present in order to sponsor a butterfly.

CSC Welcomes Three New Board Members

We are honored to welcome three very experienced members to our Board of Directors.

Donald Duggan is the Senior Executive VP of Banking Services at Bank of the West. Donald has many years of experience in the IT and banking fields. He received his BS in Mathematics and Business Administration from Rhodes College in Memphis, TN where he was inducted into Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.

Steven Nau is currently the Director of Sales for Victory Foam Inc., a national supplier of cushioning packaging products for the electronics industry. Steven’s earlier career was in correctional services, where he served as Assistant Executive Director. He is a head and neck cancer survivor, currently entering his third year of being cancer free. In his free time, Steven coaches soccer and basketball. Steven holds a BA in Sociology/Psychology from William Penn University, an MSW from the University of Iowa and is a Certified Financial Planner.

John Thuma currently serves as Vice President, Financial Consultant for Charles Schwab in Walnut Creek. John has held various sales management and executive positions in the internet mobility and security services fields as well as experience with charitable organizations. John and his wife are very involved with their three teenage children, supporting their baseball, lacrosse and water polo activities.

Sponsor a butterfly and honor a loved one affected by cancer

The Wings of Hope: Butterfly Release is for friends and families to celebrate and honor the lives of those living or passed, who have been touched by cancer. Please join us for this heartwarming event on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Civic Park in Walnut Creek. The day will include a ceremonial butterfly release, fun kids activities and an interactive tribute wall. Guests are given the chance to reflect and honor those close to them who have been affected by cancer, by releasing a live monarch butterfly in their name.

New Melanoma Networking Group!

This drop-in group is for people with melanoma, including long-term survivors, family and caregivers. The group is a place to share information, meet with others who know what it’s like to cope with melanoma, and support each other. For more information, please call 925.933.0107. InVision Communications Wins Philanthropy Award

We are very excited to share that our dear friends at InVision Communications, have been chosen to receive the Contra Costa Council’s 2012 Philanthropy Award. InVision Communications has been producing our largest fundraising event, the annual Wellness Gala, for the past twelve years. InVision CEO Rod Mickels is a member of our Board of Directors. We are thrilled such a great community organization is being honored and we congratulate them on their success!

On Saturday, June 9th, hundreds of Monarch butterflies took flight at the Wings of Hope: Butterfly Release honoring those in our community who have been touched by cancer. The inaugural event put on by Cancer Support Community San Francisco Bay Area, included a ceremonial butterfly release, fun kid’s activities, and an interactive tribute wall. Read more

Our Free Programs

Support Programs Ongoing professionally facilitated support groups for people with cancer and support persons are the heart of our program.

Education Programs Educational programs provide people with cancer and their loved ones the tools to manage their treatment and recovery as effectively as possible.

Mind & Body Classes Our mind & body programs help you support and strengthen your immune system by dealing more effectively with stress and helping your body recover from the effects of cancer and its treatment.

Offsite Programs Drop-in support groups are available in the Pleasanton, Antioch and San Ramon areas. Caregivers and people with cancer are welcome to attend.

Children & Teens Programs Kids Circle and Teen Talk is a program for families when a parent has cancer. Licensed therapists lead each workshop made up of an activities-based group, a separate teen group, and group for parents.

Open to Options Decision Support Program Available

Have you recently been diagnosed with a new or recurrent cancer? Do you need to make decisions about treatment options? Do you have an appointment scheduled to meet with your doctor?

Cancer Support Community now offers a question listing service to help you prepare for your upcoming oncology visit. This service is available at no cost to anyone diagnosed with a new or recurrent cancer who has to make decisions about treatment options. The goals of this program are to help you communicate clearly with your medical team, ask critical questions about your options, and help ensure that your treatment decisions fit your personal hopes and goals.
